Division of Emergency Ultrasound Overview
The University Hospitals (UH) Emergency Department Division of Emergency Ultrasound strives to advance the practice of high-quality diagnostic and therapeutic point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) in the emergency setting.
Division members provide ultrasound education to emergency department residents, fellows, medical students, advance practice providers, and attendings at UH Cleveland Medical Center as well as the community sites across the UH system. The Division oversees the longitudinal POCUS curriculum for the UHCMC Emergency Medicine Residency. The Division also collaborates with and provides ultrasound didactics and hands-on education to UH colleagues across multiple specialties including Critical Care, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Anesthesia, Family Medicine, and Internal Medicine.
Our Division manages the Emergency Department’s ultrasound image archiving, reporting, and quality assurance program that ensures excellence in the domain.
Our Division also operates the Advanced Emergency Medicine Ultrasonography (AEMUS) Fellowship program that is accredited by the Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship Accreditation Council (EUFAC). The fellowship is designed to provide a robust 1-year advanced training in emergency ultrasound that provides trainees with the knowledge and skills to become future leaders in the field.
Division faculty are actively involved in regional, national, and international ultrasound organizations and give lectures, present abstracts, and lead teams in ultrasound competitions at academic meetings.
The Division has six core ultrasound faculty in addition to several adjunct faculty who have completed an emergency ultrasound fellowship or have expertise in advanced ultrasound techniques, including advanced transthoracic echocardiography, resuscitative and intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography, and musculoskeletal ultrasound through fellowship training in anesthesia-critical care, cardiothoracic anesthesiology, and sports medicine.
